Build Your Own Phone: Motorola Unveils Project Ara

Want to Build Your Own Smartphone through customizable phone modules? With Motorola’s new Project Ara initiative you’ll be soon able to do that.

Moto Maker from Motorola allowed to customize the exterior of your phone with case, colors, engravings, etc., That is just the beginning. With a new initiative dubbed “Project Ara”, Motorola is planning to unveil a new era in smartphones by allowing to build your own phones through customizable phone modules.

The idea is simple. There will be a skeleton that holds all the modules together and you can plug your own display, battery, bluetooth, camera, speaker modules to customize the way you want it.

In theory this looks similar to building your own PC but this should be much simpler than that with easy to plug and play modules.

Project Ara according to Motorola

Led by Motorola’s Advanced Technology and Projects group, Project Ara is developing a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines.

The design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter–or something not yet thought of!

Besides technology, Phonebloks and Project Ara also have a clean goal in mind. A greener planet by throwing away less electronic devices and reuse them by replacing modules.
